Asbestos Closes Woolworths Warehouse

A dispatch warehouse in Woolworths was closed following traces of asbestos were found protruding through nearby soil.

Approximately 25 small pieces of the dangerous substance was discovered in the old Broadmeadows shed. The hazardous substance was found around fiver meters from the back entrance of the building.

A storekeeper who doesn’t want to specify his name said he was highly concerned about his and his colleagues’ health.

He said the site was closed by a health and safety executive on Thursday pending inquiries.

“We have inhaled plenty of dust from there,” he said.

He said the company is expected to compensate its workers for lung checkups although the company has not said anything in that regard.

Breathing in asbestos fibers can cause respiratory problems and sometimes fatal diseases including cancer.
