An engineering firm was issued a fine of $64,000 in costs and penalties in the Magistrates Court at Perth for importing banned asbestos material into WA.
Clyde Bergemann Senior Thermal (CBST) imported sixty two machines’ parts in 2009 from China into the Western Australian city Fremantle for the expansion of a power plant.
Officials with the Customs and Border Protection discovered that the machinery had chrysotile asbestos (alternatively known as white asbestos), a substance that can cause fatal diseases including mesothelioma and lung cancer.
In 2010 June, the company imported another 60 parts that contained the same hazardous substance into Fremantle.
The company pleaded guilty today to importing prohibited substance.
